I started up my iMac and apple sign came up then attempted to boot up then switched off I went onto uttilities and it came up with No 8 fault

Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair Disk and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Try a normal restart.
